Lip Fillers

What is this and how can it help?

Dermal fillers are used to contour the shape of the lips and enhance their appearance by adding volume. A topical anaesthetic cream or a local anaesthetic injection is used to numb the lips and reduce discomfort. Filler is then injected into the body and / or the margin of the lip. It is then massaged and moulded resulting in voluminous lips.

What are the benefits of lip fillers?

They can increase the size of the lips, change their shape and make them more defined. Any asymmetry can also be corrected. Since hyaluronic acid fillers are reversible, they can be dissolved if there are any problems or if the lips feel too big.

What are the side effects of lip fillers?

Bruising and swelling are the most common side effects. In some people the swelling can be great while others only have a minimal amount. It settles within a week or so. Filler can sometimes aggregate and form lumps. These can be easily dissolved with Hyalase. If someone is prone to recurrent cold sores, having filler injection in the lip can cause an outbreak of cold sores. Such individuals should be given Aciclovir tablets to be taken 2 days before and 3 days after the treatment to reduce the change of cold sore recurrence. Filler can occasionally migrate from where it is injected. It may therefore be more prominent above the lip. Again, this can be easily dissolved.

The most serious but rare risk occurs the labial artery supplying the lip is blocked. The filler needs to be dissolved immediately in this case using Hyalase. Steroid and antibiotics may be needed for 1 week to deal with the swelling and prevent any infection. The treatment can be redone after 4 weeks once the lips have recovered. Precautions can be taken to minimise the risk of this rare vascular complication. This is done by injecting on the dry side of the lip rather than the wet mucosal surface, drawing back the plunger of the syringe to ensure it is not in a vessel and injecting slowly. The doctor needs to know where the blood vessels are and should be confident in taking prompt action if needed.

What is the downtime?

Allow up to 2 weeks for bruising and swelling to settle and the filler to bind to the lip tissue and expand.

How long do the results of lip fillers last?

Around 6-9 months. Some people breakdown the filler faster than others.

How much do lip fillers cost?

0.5ml is £200
1ml is £375
2ml is £650

"I would highly recommend Doctor Q"

I used to go to this other place to get Botox done because it was cheap. But the last time my eyelid drooped. I called the practitioner but she kept ignoring me and was very rude. I went to Doctor Q. He explained that side effects can happen but there are ways to reduce the risk. He gave me some eye drops which helped by eyelid droop and after a month it resolved completely. I now get Botox at Luxe Skin. I would highly recommend Doctor Q.
