START NOWDermal fillers are mostly composed of Hyaluronic Acid which is a substance already present in skin. It is responsible for skin hydration and plumpness. Dermal fillers are a gel like substance that can be injected into the skin to plump up lips and cheeks, treat under eye hollows, smooth out lines and wrinkles, lift jowls and define the jaw.
Dermal fillers are injected with either a needle or a cannula. Most fillers contain lidocaine anaesthesia that numbs the skin. The procedure take around 30 minutes. The results are visible straight away but it does take around 2 weeks for the final result to appear. The results last between 9-18 months depending on the type of filler and how fast your body breaks it down.
The main brands are Juvederm, Restylane, Teosyal, Belotero and Aliaxin. The Vycross range from Juvederm which includes Volbella, Volift, Voluma and Volux are probably the most expensive and longest lasting fillers. They integrate well with the skin and appear natural during facial movements.
Dermal fillers are very safe and millions of injections have been carried out worldwide. The main side effects being redness, swelling and bruising which usually settle within a week. Complications can arise in a minority of cases and are largely reversible by dissolving the hyaluronic acid filler. Fillers made from other materials cannot be dissolved. Dermal fillers can sometimes form lumps which need to be dissolved with an enzyme injection called Hyalase. Rarely steroid injections may be needed to remove the lump. As with any procedure, skin infection can occur that may need antibiotic treatment. The most serious complication of dermal filler happens if it blocks a blood vessel. This requires the filler to be dissolved immediately. If this is not done, part of the skin supplied by the blood vessel can get damaged. It is therefore extremely important that dermal fillers are injected by medical professionals only and in a clinical environment. The qualifications and experience of the injector are vital if you want safe treatment with excellent results.
Dermal fillers are very popular with millions of injections done every year worldwide. They are suitable for almost everyone who wishes to reduce lines, wrinkles and skin folds, to plump lips and cheeks, to define jaw and chin and to rejuvenate the face and create a lift.
Dermal fillers are very versatile and can be used to volumise, define, lift, contour and smooth out skin. The most commonly treated areas are under eye hollows, cheeks, jaw, chin, jowls, nasolabial and marionette lines and nose reshaping (also known as non-surgical rhinoplasty). For full face rejuvenation, 8-10 mls of filler is used in different areas of the face to achieve a liquid facelift and improve jowls.
